GERMANY's Leipzig/Halle Airport looks on course for a record year for cargo as its volumes over the first eight months have exceeded 1m tonnes, up 18.4 per cent over the same period last year, according to London's Air Cargo News.

The increase puts it on target to beat last year's record total of 1.38 million tonnes. In August, the airport processed 125,050 tonnes, an increase of 15.1 per cent compared with a year earlier.

The airport is the largest hub of express airline DHL, which has this year benefited from a boom in e-commerce demand. It is also the first regional airfreight centre for Amazon Air in Europe.

The airport is also serving as a transshipment centre for medical relief supplies and protective equipment in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Freight charter flights have regularly been handled during the last few weeks and months - in addition to normal services - and many of them have been transporting millions of Covid-19 tests, for example," the airport said.

In total, more than 80 cargo airlines fly to the airport.
