THE Shenzhen-based car manufacturer BYD is ceasing production of fossil-fueled vehicles, reports Caixin.
The final non-electric units will be done in March, with the company shifting gears to electric vehicles.
In a tweet, the company declared the decision makes it "the first automotive manufacturer in the world to stop the production of fuel combusting vehicles".
BYD stated it will continue making the components of fossil-fueled vehicles and offering after-sales services to customers.
BYD sold more electric vehicles than combustion engine vehicles for the first time in 2021.
BYD's electric vehicle sales volume increased 218 per cent, reaching 604,000 units in 2021, while production of other types of vehicles decreased 43 per cent below 137,000 units.
