US TREASURY Secretary Janet Yellen convenes a meeting of top international financial officials this week to address a global food security, reports Bloomberg.
Talks include the heads of the International Monetary Fung (IMF) who are expected to urge action to address dire consequences of record price surges.
"With over 275 million people facing acute food insecurity, I am deeply concerned about the impact of Russia's war on food prices and supply, particularly on poor populations," Ms Yellen said in a speech to the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington.
Food summit participants will include ministers representing the G-7 and G-20, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva, and World Bank president David Malpass.
Georgieva, Malpass, UN World Food Programme executive director David Beasley and World Trade Organisation director-general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala issued a joint statement asking the international community to support vulnerable countries through grants to cover urgent financing needs.
