UK rail and transport workers to stage day-long strike July 27

TENS of thousands of British rail and transport workers will stage a 24-hour strike Wednesday July 27 over having received a "paltry" pay offer of an immediate four per cent pay ncreases and another four per cent later if they agree to unspecified changes in working conditions, Reuters reports.
Said the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union: "Members are leading the way for all workers in this country who are sick and tired of having their pay and conditions slashed by a mixture of big business profits and government policy."
The RMT seeks a pay rise of at least seven per cent. The government, criticised for not being involved in the talks, says unions must resolve it directly with employers.
