THE Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) has reduced container handling charges up to five per cent in line with a decline in fuel prices, reports Dhaka's Business Standard.

The association has reduced the charge for export-oriented goods by 3.5 per cent to 21.5 per cent, for imported goods by five per cent to 30 per cent and for empty containers by 3.5 per cent to 20.5 per cent.

The new rates will be effective from September, according to two separate circulars signed by BICDA secretary general Ruhul Amin Sikde.

Earlier, BICDA increased container handling charges 35 per cent for imported containers, 25 per cent for export-oriented containers and 24 per cent for handling empty containers following the diesel price hike.

Mr Sikder said the association then assured the leaders of the Bangladesh Freight Forwarder Association and the Bangladesh Shipping Agent Association that the ICD charge would be brought down once the price of fuel drops in the country.
