THE 698-TEU EF Ava has suffered an engine room explosion and a loss of propulsion 25 nautical miles off southwest coast of Iceland, reports Rostock. Germany's FleetMon.
The Portuguese-flagged ship was en route from English North Sea port of Immingham and bound for Reykjav¨ªk.
The explosion created much smoke, filling engine room. Icelandic coast guard cutter Thor steamed to assist, with helicopters preparing to transfer firefighters on board of containership.
But the crew had the situation under control, and no firefighters were needed. All crewmen were unharmed and what little fire there was, was quickly extinguished. Thor reached disabled ship and either took her in tow or escorted her.
