SAUDI Arabia's Jubail Commercial Port has been added to Hapag-Lloyd's India Gulf Service 1 (IG1) route.

According to The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), Jubail will from February 12 be added to the weekly route which is served by three container ships averaging 2,400 TEU. The route connects Jebel Ali, Karachi, Mundra, Sohar, Shuaiba, Umm Qasar and, from February 12, Jubail.

"The newest cargo service will contribute to fulfilling the ambitions of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) to upscale the Kingdom's integration with global trade networks besides improving its score in the UNCTAD's Liner Shipping Connectivity Index to 80 points," said Mawani.

The announcement follows another earlier this year that Jubail was added to the India-East Med service by MSC. That weekly service linked the port to Khalifa, Jebel Ali, Hamad, Karachi, Mundra, Hazira, Alexandria, Tekirdag, Aliaga, Mersin, and King Abdullah by five vessels with an average 8,000 TEU capacity.

Jubail is a major port for Saudi Arabia's industrial and petrochemical sites in the East of the Kingdom, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
