EUROPE's busiest hub saw cargo volumes in 2022 decline by 13.3 per cent year on year to two million tonnes, reports London's Air Cargo News.
Airport operator Fraport said that the main factors contributing to this decline included the airspace restrictions related to the war in Ukraine, the zero-Covid strategy pursued by China and the overall economic slowdown.
Last year's volumes were also 5.6 per cent behind pre-Covid levels in 2019. The cargo volume decline deepened in December as the airport registered a 19 per cent year-on-year decline to 159,671 tonnes.
"Still reflecting the overall economic slowdown and the impact of airspace restrictions related to the Ukraine war," Fraport said.
The German hub isn't the only European airport to have registered a decline in volumes last year as geopolitical and economic conditions took a turn for the worse.
Liege registered a 19.3 per cent year-on-year decline to 1.1 million tonnes, cargo volumes at Brussels Airport totalled 775,721 tonnes, down by eight per cent compared to 2021, and at Heathrow there was a five per cent drop off to 1.4 million tonnes.
