THE Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has stopped offering evening truck hours at the Port of Savannah and has discontinued the use of several inland pop-up storage yards as volumes decline, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
Savannah's gates will now operate between 4am and 6pm during the week and open from 8am to 5pm Saturdays.
The GPA instituted evening truck gate hours in 2021 to combat the import surge that resulted in more than 30 vessels anchored outside the Garden City terminal, then adjusted the hours last year to open earlier in the morning.
The decision to eliminate evening hours comes as volumes at Savannah have cooled after two busy years. Laden imports increased year on year in 25 out of 26 months between August 2020 and September 2022, according to PIERS data. Since October, however, laden imports have declined in four consecutive months on a year on year basis.
