Acquisition spree rampant despite downtun in container market

FLUSH with money after the most profitable three years in the history of container shipping, a small group of acquisitive ocean carriers are building out transport capabilities on land and in air, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.

However, the strategies behind the acquisition spree are not uniform across the carriers.

While Maersk has been consistent in acquisitions to build out its end-to-end integrator model, Hapag-Lloyd stated it's focusing on terminal investments.

Others, such as Mediterranean Shipping Company and CMA CGM, have invested in adjacent businesses within transportation.

The expanding carriers can afford to be aggressive since the industry is expected to hit US$290 billion in operating profit for 2022 and is set to make another $150 billion this year.

Meanwhile, in December, MSC Group finalised a $6.3 billion acquisition of Bollore Africa Logistics.

In January, Hapag-Lloyd declared it took a 40 per cent share in an Indian terminal logistics provider after buying a 49 per cent stake in Italian ports operator Spinelli Group last September.

Cosco Shipping Holdings invested $814 million to take a 5.8 per cent stake in China state agricultural conglomerate COFCO.

CMA CGM is looking to acquire Bollore Logistics, according to a February 3 Bloomberg report.

In early 2022, Bollore Group paid a $14.5 million fine to avoid prosecution tied to corruption charges out of Togo.
