SUSTAINABILITY has shifted from a positive differentiator to becoming a licence to operate as shipowners and operators face mounting pressure from regulators and investors to go green, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
New regulations - such as the inclusion of shipping in EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), as well as IMO's EEXI and CII ratings - are pushing shipping lines to focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategies.
Shipping industry appears to lag behind other industries with environmental transparency and climate action. Only 46 per cent of the largest shipping companies have made pledges in line with IMO net-zero commitments and only 41 per cent have greenhouse gas reporting.
"ESG compliance can drive commitment and action towards decarbonisation and help shipping companies meet the rising request from customers and investors to deliver on environmental, social and governmental practices," said Maersk's Zero-Carbon chief Bo Cerup-Simonsen.
