THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) reported that 18 containers of smuggled onions were intercepted at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), reports CNN Philippines.
The shipment originated from China and was falsely declared to contain pizza dough and fish balls.
Upon inspection, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS-MICP) Field Office found a large quantity of red and yellow onions hidden beneath the pizza dough.
This is a violation of the Customs Modernisation and Tariff Act (CMTA).
In addition, the pizza dough used to conceal the onions lacked the necessary licence and permit from the Philippine Food and Drug Administration, which violates the Foods and Drugs Act of 2009.
Farmers had a bad poor onion harvest, but were compensated by higher prices. Protection from imports, mostly from China, was eased in the face of the shortage, which undermined prices for farmers. Onions, then more costly than beef, are a high volume staple of the Philippines.
The BOC is still determining the total value of the seized goods.
