Twenty-nine die in ferry fire in Philippines, including 3 children

At least 29 are dead, including three children after a ferry carrying over 200 passengers in the southern most Philippines caught fire in the waters near Baluk-Baluk Island in predominently Muslim Basilan province.
Some 60 were taken to medical centres. The mayor of the coastal municipality of Hadji Muhtamad announced that many sustained injuries including burns.
The management of the passenger ferry that caught fire has begun extending financial assistance to the families of the dead and injured and apologised for the accident, reports the Philippine Star.
Alesson Shipping Lines apologised for the pain and anguished caused by the tragedy. "We cannot apologise enough and we are profoundly sorry for the misery this incident has caused to many of us," said a company statement.
Alesson security officer Kenjie Olaso said the ship's captain and all of the 35 crew members were saved some with minor injuries.
The ill-fated ferry sailed from the port of Zamboanga with 205 passengers listed in the manifest, 35 crew members, eight soldiers and three Philippine Coast Guard personnel. It caught fire while in the vicinity of Baluk-Baluk Island, Hadji Muhtamad town, Basilan.
There were 216 survivors and 18 charred remains recovered from the upper deck a seven passengers remain missing.
Families of the victims were each given PHP25,000 (US$460) as preliminary financial assistance. They were also entitled to PHP200,000 each in insurance claims. Survivors would be given PHP3,000 each.
"But it is not limited to that since all of them have their respective insurance with our company every time they secure tickets, they are also given a maximum of PHP10,000 for their medical needs if in case they need one," said the company.
"We will coordinate with their families and appeal to help us identify these bodies so we can give what is due them," Alesson Shipping said.
