Container cranes lag containerships by a generation

THE span of gantry cranes is failing to keep pace with the growing beam of containerships, says State University of New York (SUNY) transportation professor Shmuel Yahalom, reported reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

Speaking to the recent CMA Shipping 2023 in Stamford, Connecticut, Prof Yahalom said crane productivity has increased 90 per cent in the past two decades, but vessel bay size has increased 202 per cent.

"But what happens at the port? At the port, you are dealing with diseconomies of scale because the ships are bigger, and it takes more time to discharge and load a bay¡ªnot the entire ship, you can put many cranes on the ship. But the bay itself is bigger, no matter what you do, you will have more time to discharge, and that part was neglected in the analysis," said Prof Yahalom.

The cranes themselves contribute to the increased bay time by blocking neighbouring bays due to their size.

Prof Yahalom calculated the time it takes to fully unload and load a single bay, known as bay time, and discovered that it increased by an average of 4.5 hours every time a new vessel class with a broader beam was introduced.

He used a rate of 35 lifts per hour to calculate the estimated bay time for each vessel.
