QATAR's Hamad port posted a 29.3 per cent month-to-month container throughput increase from June to 122,827 TEU in July despite a year-long boycott and land blockade by its Arab neighbours ostensibly because of its support for "terrorism" but also said to be because it allows Aljazeera television freedom to broadcast.

Strong momentum was evident in the port’s vehicle movement, with its capacity to receive 500,000 vehicles per year, a 20 per cent month-to-month increase, reported the daily Peninsula.

Last month, 133 commercial vessels called at Hamad port which is one of the largest multi-purpose ports in the region. It handled 61,280 tonnes of break bulk in July as well as 8,005 tonnes of bulk.

On 5 June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar, accusing it, among other things, of "supporting terrorism". The blockading countries expelled Qatari citizens and closed land, sea and air routes.

But Qatar, whose per capita income is the world's highest at US$129,350 a year, remained unflinching, refuting the accusations and demonstrating a resilience that has withstood the new regional status quo for more than a year now.

Qatar filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the grounds that the UAE's discriminatory policies had led to ongoing human rights violations. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt were left out because, unlike the UAE, they are not signatories to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Qatar estimates that the land blockade has significantly affected around 13,000 of its citizens, including hundreds of families who have been broken up. Among other things, Doha has denounced the UAE's unjustified expulsion of its citizens, ban on Qataris entering or transiting through the country, and discrimination against its students..
