The Defense Ministry of Russia mentioned on Wednesday that it had “destroyed” what it claimed was the last warship of Ukraine.
The landing vessel dubbed the Yuri Olefirenko was reportedly struck by “high-precision” Aerospace Forces weaponry belonging to Russia on Monday in the Black Sea port of Odesa, the Defense Ministry mentioned during a daily briefing. It wasn’t immediately possible to check Moscow’s assertion, and Kyiv hasn’t yet commented on such a claim. The spokesman of Ukraine’s naval forces, Oleh Chalyk, refused to comment on the claim but mentioned that he didn’t ask to pay attention to the Russian sources. The Yuri Olefirenko is a medium-sized landing vessel dedicated to troops and vehicles. Initially named the Kirovohrad, the vessel was renamed in 2016 in honour of a Ukraine-based marine killed near the port of Mariupol in 2015. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s President, decorated its crew in June last year. Ukraine’s military informed on Monday that heavy air strikes resulted in a fire and damaged infrastructure at the port of Odesa, one of the key grain export hubs besides its naval base. The Ukrainian military’s southern command mentioned that it was determining the extent of the impairment at the time.
