IN early May, HGK Shipping signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hydrogenous LOHC Maritime and Hydrogenous LOHC Technologies to work together to create a scalable solution for utilising hydrogen as a widespread energy source, reports Athens-based Safety4Sea.

The technique involves using a liquid carrier called LOHC (liquid organic hydrogen carrier). The partners plan to construct a demonstration vessel by 2028 that will use a fuel cell powered by hydrogen from the LOHC as its propellant.

According to HGK Shipping CEO Steffen Bauer, introducing the demonstration vessel could be a significant achievement in attaining climate-neutral inland waterway shipping and help decarbonise industrial operations that require energy sources such as hydrogen.

The demonstration has the potential to map the entire value-added chain, from producing the LOHC to using the drive technology and transporting goods and even ensuring that potential customers can use the vessel.
