Chinese firm signs deal to build 3rd largest port in Cambodia

A Cambodian company signed a contract with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to build a multi-purpose seaport in the Kampot province of southwestern Cambodia, reports Xinhua.
The contract was signed between CHEC-Cambodia managing director Lan Qiuli and Kampot Logistics president Meas Thom in the presence of Cambodian Public Works and Transport Minister Sun Chanthol.
The US$1.5 billion Kampot Logistics and Port project began last year, with the Shanghai Construction Group and the China Road and Bridge Corporation also involved in the construction.
The 15-year project will be carried out in three phases, with the first phase costing an estimated $200 million from 2022 to 2025.
The 15-metre deepwater port will be capable of handling 300,000 TEU by 2025 and up to 600,000 TEU by 2030, accommodating vessels of 100,000 tons.
"This mega-project includes a container terminal, a special economic zone, a free trade area, a logistics hub, an oil refinery, and a terminal for tourist vessels, among others," said Mr Chanthol.
