IN the Gulf of Oman, the US Navy reported its intervention to prevent Iran from seizing two commercial tankers in the latest episode of ship seizures or attacks that have occurred in the area since 2019, reports Reuters.

Chevron confirmed that one of the incidents involved the Richmond Voyager, a large crude carrier managed by the US oil major, and assured that the crew onboard were safe.

According to Navy Fifth Fleet representative Timothy Hawkins, an Iranian navy vessel fired shots during the second attempted seizure, both incidents occurred in the waters between Iran and Oman.

Mr Hawkins did not disclose how the US Navy prevented the ships' seizure and provided no further details at this time. The specific information regarding the second vessel involved in the incident remains unclear.

Ambrey, a British maritime security company, stated that a warship from a multinational navy task group was present in the area and had requested the Iranian navy to cease harassing one of the merchant ships.

Iran's state news agency, IRNA, has not yet commented on the matter.

Since 2019, there have been several attacks on shipping in the strategic Gulf waters during periods of tension between the United States and Iran.

The US Navy reported that Iran seized two oil tankers in a week just over a month ago.

Approximately one-fifth of the world's crude oil and oil products pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital choke point between Iran and Oman, according to data from analytics firm Vortexa.

Ship-tracking data from Refinitiv shows that prior to the recent incident in the Gulf of Oman, the Richmond Voyager had previously docked in Ras Tannoura in eastern Saudi Arabia.

The vessel has continued on its journey with Singapore listed as its destination.
