DURING a routine operation on June 30, the Philippines' coast guard reported an incident involving Chinese and Philippine coast guard vessels near the Second Thomas Shoal, reports Hong Kong's South China Morning Post.

The Philippine coast guard boats, which were assigned as escorts for a navy mission to resupply marines stationed on a grounded navy ship at the shoal, were approached by two Chinese coast guard vessels.

According to BRP Malabrigo commanding officer Commodore Jay Tarriela, one of the Chinese boats came within approximately 90 metres (100 yards) of their bow, prompting them to slow down to avoid a collision.

Mr Tarriela, who serves as the coast guard representative for the West Philippine Sea, stated that the Chinese vessels engaged in dangerous maneuvers, including crossing the bow of the Philippine Coast Guard vessels.

Such proximity increases the risk of a collision.

It should be noted that Manila refers to the waters west of the Philippines as the West Philippine Sea.

The Chinese embassy in Manila has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
