Cathay seeks cabin crew from China after discrimination scandal

HONG Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways is to recruit cabin crew from China next month to increase the number of Mandarin-speaking flight attendants.
The move follows the recent sacking of three cabin crew members for allegedly mocking the English-language proficiency of a passenger from China, reports the South China Morning Post.
The move has also been seen by analysts as a step to help the airline to compete in the growing market in China
According to an internal memo, the airline's CEO Ronald Lam, said: "With the growing number of Putonghau speaking customers, it has always been our intention to recruit a proportion of cabin crew from the Chinese mainland after the pandemic."
It's not known how many cabin crew members will he hired from China, but Mr Lam stressed that the airline will still largely recruit its cabin crew from Hong Kong.
Mr Lam also pointed out that as an incentive for cabin crew to expand their language proficiency, a monthly allowance is to be offered to those speaking more than one Asian language.
