DREWRY Maritime Research data show that Philippine ports have been advancing in economic globalization, surpassing the static volumes of their Southeast Asian peers.
Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the Philippines' largest international gateway, ranked third among the largest gateway ports in the region, reports The Manila Times
It handled 2.5 million TEU in 2021, just behind Westport Kelang Multi Terminal in Malaysia and Saigon New Port-Cat Lai Terminal in Vietnam. MICT bagged the 11th spot among the top 20 terminals in the region, while Manila North Port ranked 19th.
The Port of Manila was the only port in the region with double-digit growth, compared to the largest ports with a decline and other ports with single-digit increases, according to the report.
In 2022, the Port of Manila handled a total of 5.5 million TEU, making it the seventh busiest gateway port in Southeast Asia (including all containers, gateway, transshipment, and domestic cargo). This marks a significant 10 per cent increase compared to the 4.9 million TEU handled in 2021.
In terms of gateway volumes, the Port of Manila ranked 6th, with a growth rate of 10.7 per cent after handling a total of 3.9 million TEU in 2022 compared to 3.6 million TEU in the preceding year.
The Port of Cebu and the Port of Davao demonstrated huge advancements, ranking 13th and 15th, respectively.
The Port of Cebu handled 937,052 TEU, and the Port of Davao handled 824,898 TEU in 2022. These ports had a 2.5 per cent and 0.1 per cent increase year on year, respectively.
Philippine Port Authority (PPA) general manager Jay Santiago said this was achieved through commitment, hard work and transparency to create more port infrastructures that are at par with global trade.
"The PPA is improving its level of commitment toward strengthening and evolving Philippine ports to meet global demands. Last year's data is a testament that Philippine ports are one of the leading ports in Southeast Asia," said Mr Santiago.
"The Philippine ports' South East Asia ranking is a contributing factor to the economy, including transportation, logistics and manufacturing, generating employment opportunities and contributing to economic development."
