DURING the United Nations Bonn Climate Change Conference held the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) provided an update on its progress towards adopting a revised strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping, reports Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
The enhanced strategy is expected to be adopted at the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) meeting scheduled for July 3 -7, following a gathering of the Intersessional GHG Working Group from June 26 - 30.
In a statement to the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), Camille Bourgeon from IMO emphasized the implementation of mandatory energy efficiency regulations already in place and the ongoing efforts to ensure that the international shipping industry takes appropriate measures to address climate change.
Additionally, as IMO continues to explore ways to promote the availability and scalability of sustainable low- and zero-carbon marine fuels and technologies in the near future, the organization remains committed to supporting developing countries.
This support aims to ensure a fair and equitable transition to low-carbon shipping while seizing the development opportunities associated with decarbonizing the maritime sector.
Furthermore, IMO is expediting its work in developing the necessary safety regulatory framework that will enable the safe handling of future marine fuels onboard ships.
