A TENATIVE agreement has been reached between United Parcel Service (UPS) and the Teamsters union regarding updated pay and working conditions, reports London's Air Cargo News.
Facing the possibility of strike action from approximately 340,000 union members when the existing agreement expires on July 31, the express giant managed to avert this situation.
Both parties have announced a landmark deal that encompasses several significant changes. This includes the creation of more full-time positions, salary increases, and the implementation of new health and safety protocols.
The duration of the agreement spans five years and pertains to employees in small-package roles who are represented by the US Teamsters.
However, before it is officially implemented, the agreement needs to undergo voting and ratification by the union members.
The voting process will begin on August 3 and will conclude on August 22.
"Together, we reached a win-win-win agreement on the issues that are important to Teamsters leadership, our employees, and to UPS and our customers," said UPS chief executive Carol Tome.
"This agreement continues to reward UPS's full- and part-time employees with industry-leading pay and benefits while retaining the flexibility we need to stay competitive, serve our customers and keep our business strong."
Said Teamsters general president Sean O'Brien: "UPS has put US$30 billion in new money on the table as a direct result of these negotiations. We've changed the game, battling it out day and night to make sure our members won an agreement that pays strong wages, rewards their labor, and doesn't require a single concession,"
"This contract sets a new standard in the labour movement and raises the bar for all workers."
