CATHAY Cargo and the Cathay Cargo Terminal have successfully secured the coveted International Air Transport Association (IATA) Center of Excellence for Independent Validators Lithium Batteries (CEIV Li-batt) certification, reports London's Air Cargo News.
This latest achievement adds to their existing array of CEIV certifications, including CEIV Pharma, CEIV Fresh, and CEIV Live Animals.
In tandem with their airline-specific CEIV Li-batt accreditation, Cathay Cargo has augmented its safeguards for lithium-ion battery shipments.
This includes a comprehensive suite of fire containment bags (FCBs) and fire-resistant containers (FRCs) to ensure safe transport.
Notably, Cathay Cargo has introduced a Cargo Agent Operation Programme and an indemnity scheme to counter the challenges posed by increasingly intricate supply chains.
At Hong Kong International Airport, the Cathay Cargo Terminal has also autonomously clinched the CEIV Li-batt accreditation, bolstering its status as a reliable cargo terminal operator.
CEIV Li-batt sets a benchmark by enhancing competency and quality management throughout the logistics supply chain for lithium-ion battery handling. This certification is open to shippers, forwarders, and cargo terminal operators alike.
Underpinning the programme are the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the IATA Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations (LBSR).
The CEIV Li-batt initiative supplements these regulations with training, assessment, and validation, all of which underscore compliance with the stipulated guidelines.
"The air cargo market for products containing lithium-ion batteries is experiencing significant growth. We congratulate Cathay Cargo and its cargo terminal operator, Cathay Cargo Terminal, on successfully achieving IATA's CEIV Lithium Batteries Certification," said IATA vp Xie Xingquan.
"This accomplishment by one of the world's largest cargo operators and its partner, located in one of the busiest logistics hubs globally, is a significant boost for the aviation industry. Furthermore, it assures the customers of these organizations that they are adhering to the highest safety and security standards when transporting products containing lithium-ion batteries."
