MAERSK has successfully secured carbon-neutral methanol fuel for the world's first container vessel capable of operating on this environmentally conscious alternative, reports Reuters.

The adoption of methanol as a bunkering fuel has gained momentum within the shipping industry, which is actively working towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Maersk's commitment to sustainable shipping includes an order for 19 methanol-enabled ships, aligning with its ambitious goal of transporting 25 per cent of its ocean cargo using green fuels by 2030.

The maiden voyage of the world's premier carbon-neutral methanol-powered ship is scheduled to culminate in Copenhagen this year, with a christening ceremony planned for September 14.

In addition to this milestone, Maersk has also entered agreements for twelve 16,000-TEU vessels fuelled by methanol to be constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

These vessels are slated for delivery in 2024. Further, the company intends to receive six 17,000-TEU ships powered by methanol in 2025.

Notably other industry players are also embracing methanol as a green fuel. CMA CMG, for instance, has committed to ordering a minimum of 18 methanol-fuelled vessels.

This includes the procurement of six 15,000-TEU containers from China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) last year, with delivery anticipated in 2025.

In April this year, CMA CGM secured an additional 12 vessels in a US$3 billion agreement with CSSC.

Furthermore, CMA CGM has placed an order for twelve 24,000-TEU methanol-powered ships, amounting to nearly $2.9 billion.

These vessels, set for delivery between the third quarter of 2026 and the third quarter of 2028, will bolster the company's commitment to sustainable maritime operations.

Recent additions include four 16,000-TEU ships, expanding CMA CGM's green fleet.

On the horizon, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) is anticipating the delivery of nine dual-fuelled 9,000-TEU ships, scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2026.

These vessels, constructed by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, signify another stride towards cleaner and more responsible maritime transport.
