FOREIGN visitors to China can now use the country's leading mobile payment platforms, now essential to shopping and dining, reports Tokyo's Nikkei Asia.
Both WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepting international credit cards, seeking to encourage tourists in China to use the smartphone-based payment services.
WeChat Pay now supports cards issued by Visa and Mastercard, as well as Japanese credit card company JCB and others for payments of up to CNY6,000 (US$835). There is a three per cent fee for transactions more than CNY200, with an annual payment cap of CNY60,000. Alipay takes Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club and Discover cards, assessing the same three per cent fee.
With mobile payments growing in popularity, credit card and cash transactions have plummeted in China, said the report. This has created difficulties for foreign visitors. Merchants are required to accept cash payments, but many do not offer change.
