THE Norfolk Southern Railway and technology company DrayNow will launch a new app early next year that will offer shippers a way to track their intermodal cargo, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.

The joint venture is also expected to streamline communications between logistics companies and truckers in ways familiar to Amazon, DoorDash and Uber customers.

Called ModalView, the app is expected to roll out in the first half of 2024. It's the first known example of a North American Class I railway developing an app that connects logistics companies with drayage providers while offering GPS tracking technology.

The new tech offering comes a couple weeks after the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) announced a project to geofence all port and intermodal facilities in North America in coordination with Bureau International des Containers, a library that could feed into ModalView in the coming years.

DrayNow already offers an app similar to ModalView. The key difference is that the existing DrayNow app connects logistics providers with spot market drayage capacity, whereas ModalView will be geared toward logistics companies communicating with specific, preferred partners.
