EVERGREEN Marine Corp (EMC) marked a significant event on August 14 with the official inauguration of Terminal 7, a state-of-the-art, fully-automated container terminal situated at Kaohsiung Port, reports Athens Safety4Sea.
TIPC carried out the construction of the port's infrastructure, while Evergreen's investment focused on the operating system and handling equipment.
This included ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes, automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMGC), reach stackers and side loaders.
Aligned with the evolving patterns in the global container shipping industry and the operational requisites of mega container vessels, Terminal 7 boasts 5 berths boasting an 18-metre draft, along with a quay spanning 2,415 metres.
The terminal has 24 STS gantry cranes, among which 19 are operated remotely.
Standing out among these cranes are 16 units that reach an impressive height of 55.5 metres and are tailored to accommodate ultra-large container ships carrying up to 25 rows of containers on their decks.
The primary objective is to enhance the efficiency of quayside operations.
Terminal 7 is also set to integrate advanced technological features, including 5G communication systems, optical fibre connectivity, and comprehensive Internet of Things (IoT) networks spanning the entire site.
These capabilities will be complemented by Evergreen's intelligent terminal operating system (EMCTOS), optical character recognition (OCR) technology, and a real-time power consumption monitoring system.
The inauguration of Terminal 7's five berths will take place in two distinct phases.
Presently, Berth S5, S4, and S3B are already operational. In the next phase, scheduled for July 2024, Berth S1, S2, and S3A will commence operations.
Upon full activation the following year, Terminal 7 will accommodate simultaneous berthing for up to four 24,000 TEU container vessels and two feeder vessels.
With a sprawling yard area spanning 149 hectares, the facility can house 89,238 TEU of laden containers and 43,656 TEU empties.
By erecting the new automated quayside operations and an unmanned yard within Terminal 7, we aim to provide clients with heightened efficiency and environmentally conscious services, all while creating a more favourable working environment for our local workforce.
