THE Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), a facility operated by the International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) at the Port of Melbourne, is enhancing its equipment fleet through the incorporation of six new automated stacking cranes (ASC), reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
These additional stacking cranes, secured as part of VICT's ongoing expansion initiative, are designated to operate across three novel yard modules.
This strategic inclusion will expand the terminal's yard capacity by a substantial 30 per cent, while augmenting its reefer capacity by 43 per cent.
In conjunction with this, the landside will install 15 new truck grids, effectively bolstering slot availability by 30 per cent.
Complementing these developments, VICT is introducing two larger ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, elevating the total STS cranes to seven.
These new additions will have an impressive outreach, spanning 22 containers and allowing them to proficiently service neopanamax vessels with capacities of up to 14,000 TEU.
Furthermore, to accommodate enhanced operations, the quay line will be extended by 71 metres.
This extension is designed to accommodate the simultaneous berthing of two vessels measuring 336 metres long.
Anticipated to be completed and operational by early 2024, this extension project is poised to elevate VICT's annual throughput capacity from 250,000 TEU to an estimated 1.25 million TEU.
