PROGRESSING further into the realm of unmanned ships, the maritime industry has achieved a significant milestone by introducing a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered capesize bulk carrier in South Korea, reports Singapore's Splash 247.

This vessel, the HL Nambu 2, boasting a capacity of 180,000 deadweight tons, has been constructed by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for H-Line, a domestic shipowner.

Notably, it pioneers the incorporation of AI-driven machinery monitoring and safety systems, symbolising a pivotal advancement toward autonomous shipping.

Among these groundbreaking features are the AI-based engineering solutions, HiCBM and HiCAMS, both of which have received endorsement from the American Bureau of Shipping.

Operating in real-time, these systems perform diagnostics on critical ship equipment and can promptly identify emergencies and unanticipated incidents, including fires.

HiCBM is responsible for overseeing and regulating the main engines, compressors, and pumps. Leveraging artificial intelligence, it proactively detects and prevents potential failures.

On the other hand, HiCAMS employs onboard CCTV feeds and AI to instantaneously identify and analyse safety-related occurrences.

This achievement builds upon the progress made by HD Hyundai's subsidiaries in autonomy.

Notably, the technology demonstrated on the LNG carrier Prism Courage, which autonomously navigated a significant portion of its voyage across the Pacific Ocean under close supervision, showcased the potential for large merchant vessels to operate independently.

The outlook remains optimistic for the future of autonomous shipping. Korea Line Corporation, an affiliate of SM Group, disclosed that its subsidiary, Korealine LNG, has gained approval for self-navigating operations in Panama.

This approval pertains to its LNG bunkering ship, equipped with the Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) system, developed by Samsung Heavy Industries.

A noteworthy precedent was set earlier as Samsung Heavy Industries successfully showcased autonomous vessel navigation from South Korea to Taiwan, marked by installing SAS and the smart ship system SVESSEL on a 15,000 TEU.
