THE Tincan Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reported that it turned down a bribe offered by a smuggler who brought in a shipment of tramadol and other illicit drugs, reports the Lagos Punch.

The bribe was intended to secure the release of the smuggler's container. Tincan customs area comptroller Adekunle Oloyede disclosed this during a press briefing at the command.

Mr Oloyede further revealed that the individual in question, identified as Boniface Ike, confessed to owning two FEU containers seized due to their illicit drug contents.

"One of the suspects in custody, Boniface Ike, accepted that he is the owner (importer) of the two containers and sought to discuss privately with the command," said Mr Oloyede.

"I instructed my officers to play along; the request was granted with expectations of receiving vital information from the suspect. But to their bewilderment, the suspect pleaded for his freedom from detention and release of the containers while offering gratification to the tune of NGN50 million (US$54,330). The money was collected and kept in safe custody at the enforcement unit to be tendered as evidence."
