FINNISH investigators announced their belief that the damage to the undersea Baltic connector gas pipeline, which links Finland and Estonia in the Baltic Sea, was a result of the dislodgment of an anchor from a Chinese containership earlier this month, reports the Associated Press.

The National Bureau of Investigation, a Finnish police agency, has collected evidence and data indicating the Hong Kong-flagged cargo vessel, Newnew Polar Bear, as the responsible party for the pipeline's damage beneath the Gulf of Finland.

Detective Superintendent Risto Lohi, leading the NBI's investigation, disclosed during a news conference on Tuesday that a 1.5 to four-meter-wide trail on the seabed led to the location of the pipeline damage.

It is believed that this trail was created by a hefty six-ton anchor, which was recovered by the Finnish Navy.
