THE Danish government has criticised "unacceptable" levels of bullying or sexual harassment on Danish ships over a 12-month period, reports London's Financial Times.
It published a report that found 17 per cent of the 3,500 seafarers polled had witnessed incidents of bullying or sexual harassment.
Danish Business Minister Morten Bodskov, Denmark's business minister, said he was "surprised by the extent" of the incidents.
Mr Bodskov called on the industry to address the issue "iimmediately", adding that "more must be done to ensure that seafarers on board Danish ships don't have to fear harassment and bullying".
The problem risks impeding efforts to attract more women into seafaring. Women make up just 1.2 per cent of the 1.89 million.
At the same time, shipowners have struggled with a staff shortage, with an additional 89,510 officers needed between 2021 and 2026, according to the report.
A 2019 poll published by Maritime SheEo found only a third of women on ships said they had a good experience. Some 12 per cent of those who moved to jobs on land because of physical or mental harassment.
Sanjam Gupta, founder of Maritime SheEo and director of Indian logistics group Sitara Shipping, said the industry remained overshadowed by a ¡°patriarchal mindset¡±. ¡°Some think the ship is not a place for a woman,¡± she said.
