CHINA will require export permits for some graphite products from December to protect national security, the commerce ministry announced, reports Reuters.

China faces growing challenges from foreign governments over its manufacturing dominance, reports Reuters. Graphite is used in the batteries for electric vehicles (EV) and China is the world's top producer, providing 67 per cent of global supplies.

It also refines more than 90 per cent of the world's graphite into material used in virtually all EV battery anodes.

China is enacting the curbs at the same time that foreign governments are increasing their pressure on its companies over their industrial practices.
