DATA published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that demand for air freight globally, measured in freight tonne kilometres (Fakes), increased 5.9 per cent in October year on year.
But October's result marks a slowdown from the 9.2 per cent annual growth recorded in September.
Freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometres (Fats), increased 3.7 per cent year on year in October.
"While cargo demand remains strong, several indicators show that we may have passed the growth peak.
"The new export orders component of the global Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) is stable. And the upward trend in seasonally adjusted freight volumes has moderated.
"Freight volumes are still expected to grow in 2018, though at a slower pace," the IATA statement said.
Airlines in all regions reported an increase in total year-on-year demand in October, though growth slowed everywhere but Africa.
Asia Pacific airlines saw freight volumes increase 4.4 per cent in October year on year.
North American carriers posted a 6.6 per cent increase in October, a slowdown from the 7.4 per cent recorded in September.
European airlines posted a 6.4 per cent increase in freight demand in October, again a slowdown from the 10.6 per cent growth recorded in September.
Middle Eastern carriers' year-on-year freight volumes were up 4.6 per cent in October and capacity rose 3.4 per cent, a slight slowdown from the 4.7 per cent posted the previous month.
Latin American airlines experienced a growth in demand of 7.2 per cent in October.
African carriers posted the biggest year-on-year increase in demand of all regions in October, with freight volumes rising 30.3 per cent.
