HAPAG-Lloyd is set to deploy Starlink satellite internet technology across its fleet, following a successful pilot phase, reports gCaptain, Ventura, California.

Hapag-Lloyd, ranked as the world's fifth-largest container shipping line regarding TEU capacity, boasts a fleet of over 250 vessels, including 122 owned ships, as reported by Alphaliner.

The introduction of high-speed onboard connectivity has been proven to enhance crew welfare, boost operational efficiency and safety, and contribute to attracting and retaining top talent.

A 2018 report demonstrated that providing Wi-Fi access on ships helps alleviate some of the emotional stresses associated with extended periods at sea.

As the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology continues to expand, reliable connectivity at sea will become even more crucial.

The Starlink network, offering bandwidth of up to 250 Mbps, not only facilitates personal use but also enables remote maintenance and vessel inspections.

This leads to cost savings and improved service.

Hapag-Lloyd's crew members have tested Starlink technology on four pilot vessels since May, with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

The technology has enabled seamless video calls and streaming services.

"We are very happy to provide our seafarers with Starlink's high-speed satellite internet and thus to enhance their well-being on board. But also for Fleet Management, the change in communication and connectivity will be huge," said Hapag-Lloyd COO Maximilian Rothkopf.

With Starlink, seafarers can anticipate the same level of connectivity as they have onshore, including access to movies, television, and video calls, not only with family and friends but also with shoreside vessel support teams.

Other players in the maritime industry have had similar experiences.

Hong Kong-based ship manager Anglo-Eastern plans to install more than 200 Starlink systems on its managed ships in the coming year after initially equipping a dozen vessels with the technology.

MOL has also conducted trials with positive results.

Hapag-Lloyd anticipates completing the rollout of Starlink equipment by the end of 2023, with service activation slated to commence in early 2024.

Said Hapag-Lloyd CIO Donya-Florence Amer: "Implementing the new technology to our fleet marks a significant leap forward in ensuring maritime connectivity and stands to revolutionize the way our seafarers stay connected while at sea."
