CONTAINER terminals that are members of the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), including the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, handled 327,462 TEU in July, up 10.6 per cent year on year. The result marked the second consecutive month of growth that ended three straight months of year-on-year declines.
During July, total international container volumes surged 14.8 per cent against the same month last year to 262,139 TEU as imports rose 18.3 per cent to 139,567 TEU - the most for the month since 2010 - and exports jumped by 11 per cent to 122,571 TEU, the most since 2005, reported American Shipper citing figures from the NWSA.
Loaded imports registered the highest increase, up 19.6 per cent to 130,766 TEU, while loaded exports were up six per cent to 70,944 TEU. Total throughput of empty containers was up 15.9 per cent year on year to 60,429 TEU.
"July volumes validated the strong peak season forecasted by importers," NWSA said, adding that "shippers may also be shipping ahead of planned tariff hike."
On the other hand, domestic cargo volumes fell 3.4 per cent to 65,324 TEU compared with July 2017, with volumes to/from Alaska down 2.7 per cent to 56,256 TEU due to continued soft market conditions, and shipments to/from Hawaii decreased by 7.5 per cent to 9,068 TEU.
Total cargo volumes at the Pacific Northwest ports dropped in four of the first seven months of 2018 on a year-on-year basis, but thanks to the uptick in June and July total year-to-date throughput is down just 0.8 per cent to 2.1 million TEU compared with the same period in 2017.
Breakbulk volumes rose 27.6 per cent to 138,184 tonnes during the first seven months of the year but year-to-date auto volumes fell 4.9 per cent to 78,424 units.
