New automated gate at JNPT looks set to drive up productivity

THE final phase of gate automation upgrades at India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is expected to accelerate truck turn times and boost overall productivity rates after it opens on September 1.
State-owned JNPCT will transition to an advanced electronic, radio frequency identification technology gate operating procedure, following in the footsteps of its privately-operated peers that are already undergoing digital transformation at the public port.
With the above in mind, JNPT has distributed a "standard operating procedure" to various stakeholders such as shipper trade groups and logistics providers, as well as steps to be followed for inter-terminal truck movement, reported IHS Media.
"The stakeholders will ensure that all the tractor trailers coming to the JNPCT have drivers and tractor trailers registered before coming. The registration has to be through E-Form 13 portal, for which access will be given to authorised parties," the port advisory stated.
The Form 13 documentation has been a cumbersome, manual process with extensive paperwork, which typically creates long delays/congestion at port gates.
JNPCT's peers APM Terminals-operated Gateway Terminals India and DP World Nhava Sheva, which includes Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal and Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal, have already decreased truck turn times considerably with paperless gate operations. PSA International-operated Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals is also equipped with automated gates.
With all terminal gates operating digitally at full speed, officials expect productivity and cost benefits will show improved results which are critical in India's hyper-competitive trade market.
JNPCT operates 11 truck gates - five for exports, four for imports and two for empty movement - and has a 1.35 million-TEU annual capacity.
