MALAYSIA announced a ban on Israeli-flagged cargo ships from entering its ports, citing Israel's actions in Gaza as a disregard for "basic humanitarian principles," reports Agence France-Presse.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declared an immediate prohibition on ships destined for Israel, preventing them from loading cargo at any port within the predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian nation.

Specifically, Mr Anwar pointed to Israel's largest shipping company, Zim.

Although Malaysia's cabinet had granted Zim permission to dock its vessels at Malaysian ports in 2002, the latest statement clarified that this authorisation has now been rescinded.

The move underscores Malaysia's stance in response to perceived violations of humanitarian principles in the ongoing situation in Gaza.
