DANISH shipping giant Maersk has sent two US-flagged containerships through the Red Sea carrying goods for the United States Government, according to tracking data.

The two ships, the 6,500-TEU Maersk Sentosa and 6,200-TEU Maersk Kensington, sailed from Salalah in Oman through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and were headed north through the Red Sea.

The Maersk Sentosa and the Kensington are part of Maersk Line Limited, a US subsidiary of the Danish company, so flagged to be eligible for US Government contracts under the Jones Act.

With a fleet of 20 smaller container vessels, the unit ships goods for US agencies including the Department of Defence, State Department and USAID, Maersk said.

"The few Maersk Line Limited-vessels making the crossing are doing so near US warships, which have reduced the risks to the crews and cargo," Maersk said in an email to Reuters.
