THE captain of the 4,888-TEU MSC Roshney V has admitted to operating his vessel while under the influence of alcohol, reports Athen's Safety4Sea.

Zbigniew Chowaniec, a Polish national, was apprehended on January 15 upon his ship's arrival at the Port of Felixstowe in Suffolk.

The incident occurred while travelling from Antwerp-Bruges to Canakkale, Turkey, the ship docked in the Felixstowe Port in Suffolk, reported Bangalore's MarineInsight.

The pilot reported suspicions of intoxication to the port authorities, who were concerned about the captain's health. At 7.15am, Port Police boarded the ship and detained the captain because he was perhaps under the influence of alcohol while in command.

The Ipswich Magistrates' Court was informed that a breathalyzer test indicated the 65-year-old was nearly four times over the allowable alcohol limit.

On January 16, he pleaded guilty, and his case has been referred to the Crown Court for sentencing in February.
