IN Wuxi, an industrial hub near Shanghai, car owners participated in China's largest experiment to reshape the electricity grid, reports Bloomberg.

For 30 minutes, 50 electric cars injected two megawatts of electricity into the grid, sufficient to power 133 houses for a day, said state-owned CCTV.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the government's top economic planning agency, announced plans to select 50 projects in key locations like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, and Sichuan to conduct demonstrations by 2025.

By 2030, the goal is to standardise the technology and market mechanisms, enabling widespread adoption throughout the country.

Vehicle-to-grid projects envision cars as mobile energy storage systems, capable of charging when electricity is abundant and returning power to the grid during peak demand.

BloombergNEF suggests that by 2040, EVs in China if equipped for vehicle-to-grid capability, could have the capacity to meet the country's entire peak demand.

While this presents a long-term vision, in the short term, planners aim to encourage EV owners to avoid charging during peak hours.

Charging during high-demand periods strains the grid, which has demonstrated fragility in recent years, and necessitates increased fossil fuel consumption.

The NDRC aims for at least 60 per cent of all EV charging in demonstration cities to occur during times of low demand by 2025.

A crucial aspect of vehicle-grid integration is implementing mechanisms that inform cars and drivers about power surplus or shortages.

Unlike regions with dynamic power pricing that can fluctuate by the minute, many parts of China, especially for residential customers, have fixed daily prices.
