Yusen's LA truck appointments cut turn-around from 89 to 72 minutes

YUSEN Terminals appointment system, developed with the cooperation of LA-Long Beach truckers, will be incorporated into the Los Angeles Port Optimizer to speed the flow of trucks through container terminals.
Led by NYK Line's Yusen Terminals, the appointment system enables drivers to respond in real time to traffic and port congestion while allowing terminal operators to predict and manage truck flow, reports IHS Media.
It started when Yusen vice president Alan McCorkle decided to "talk to truckers and design what they wanted".
The result, said Harbor Trucking Association CEO Weston LaBar, is a flexible appointment system that makes the Yusen terminal in Los Angeles "the fastest conventional terminal in the harbour".
Still, the gains at Yusen, where trucks wait 72 minutes, against an 12-terminal LA-LB average of 87 minutes are not spectacular.
But now truckers and shippers serving LA-Long Beach, who have long been frustrated by the absence of a dynamic, real-time appointment system can see improvements taking shape.
But truckers and beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) are still incurring added costs and demurrage charges for missing appointment windows even when they are not at fault.
Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka said truckers enroute to the ports must have the assurance that if they adhere to their appointment slot, they will be able to complete the transaction.
Although nine of the dozen container terminals in Southern California have trucker appointment systems, the systems are suited to each terminal's needs.
There is no common set of business rules and there is no communication among the terminals. Mr LaBar has worked with Yusen Terminals for almost a year to design a system that started with the needs of the truckers and built the solutions around those needs while incorporating features required by the terminal.
