In the most recent series of incidents in the Red Sea, US Central Command forces successfully engaged five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) determined to present an imminent threat to US, coalition, and merchant vessels.

According to the US Centcom forces, the drones were spotted between 1:48 and 2:27 a.m. (local time) on April 28, 2024.

While the Central Command’s statement did not confirm whether the drones were destroyed during the conflict, it did state that the actions were taken to ensure the freedom of navigation and safety of international waters.

This incident occurred amid continued regional tensions with Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting vessels in the Red Sea since November.

The Houthis claim that their acts are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In response to the increased security risks, the United States has led a naval coalition to safeguard vessels in the region.

The US has also carried out strikes in Houthi territory both unilaterally and in coordination with Britain.

The recent engagement of the Houthis’ launched unmanned drones highlights the continuing obstacles the shipping industry faces in this strategically vital waterway.

In another incident, Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for firing missiles at the crude oil tanker Andromeda Star in the Red Sea.

According to British Maritime Security Service Ambrey, the ship’s master reported damage to the vessel following the missile hit.

Yahya Sarea, a Houthi spokesperson, said that the Panama-flagged vessel was British-owned.

However, shipping data shows that the vessel was recently sold, as per LSEG and Ambrey.
