THE giant Vadhavan port, a long-planned mega port, has got the green light from New Delhi, reports Singapore's Splash 247.

The port, located some 125 km north of Mumbai on India's west coast, has been discussed for more than a decade, but finally, the Narendra Modi administration has approved the huge US$9.1 billion development.

The first of two construction phases is expected to be completed by 2029 with the port being developed via a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, which will hold a 74 per cent stake, and Maharashtra Maritime Board.

The port will comprise nine container terminals, each 1 km long, four multipurpose berths, four liquid cargo berths, a roro berth, and a coast guard berth.

The port will have a capacity of 298 million tonnes per annum including 23.2 million TEU of container handling capacity.
