SUPPLY chain association TIACA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with King Salman International Airport (KSIA) to help develop air cargo in Saudi Arabia.
The MoU will see Tiaca work with the airport on promotion, training, innovation and sustainability, reports London's Air Cargo News.
On training the two partners will connect TIACA's training programmes with the country's cargo community, while on innovation the two will share best practices and emerging technologies to improve logistics operations.
TIACA director general Glyn Hughes said: "TIACA has been focused on spotlighting the importance of air cargo across the globe, the training of the future of the next leaders, creating a sustainable future and shining a light on innovation within the industry.
"The signing of this MoU couldn't be more of a natural step and we look forward to working with KSIA to accomplish the tasks at hand."
Marco Mejia, acting chief executive of KSIA Development Company, said: "This strategic membership marks a significant milestone for KSIA and its partners as they collectively strive to enhance Saudi Arabia's position as a global logistics powerhouse."
The MoU comes as there are plans for a major investment in the airport.
Saudi Arabia has announced plans to transform KSIA into a six-runway airport and logistics hub that will have the capacity to handle 3.5 million tons of cargo by 2050.
There are also plans to develop a Special Economic Zone to strengthen supply chains and streamline trade, e-commerce and investment.
The project will cover a total area of four square kilometres and will be developed in four phases over a period of 12 years. It will include a logistics park focused on manufacturing and logistics, supporting local supply chain development and enhancing Saudi Arabia's industrial capacity.
