SHENZHEN's Port of Yantian is aiming to achieve 16 million TEU container throughput by the year of 2025, reports the UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

Yantian has released its plans to build itself into a core area of Shenzhen as a global maritime city, positioning itself as an international shipping hub and offshore trading centre, as well as the key junction for Belt and Road Initiatives.

The plan highlights the development of high-end marine industry, marine technological innovation, Greater Bay Area marine economic cooperation and demonstration for marine ecosystem protection.

According to the plans, Yantian will accelerate the container terminal construction at its east port area and promote container berth upgrading.

Currently, the first phase project of Yantian east port area is under construction, including three new 200,000 tonnes-class automated container berths, with an annual design capacity of 3 million TEU per year, which will be developed as one of the world's top smart green container terminals.

As a hub container port at South China, Yantian port is handling 50 per cent of Shenzhen's box volume.
