Spain has announced a series of legal and logistical restrictions targeting military shipments to Israel and expanding support for Palestinians, reported Saint Petersburg's PortNews.

The measures include converting a de facto halt on military equipment sales into a permanent legal embargo via urgent decree-law and barring the use of Spanish infrastructure for Israel-bound military logistics.

Spain will deny port access to vessels carrying fuel for Israel's armed forces and prohibit state aircraft transporting defence materiel to Israel from entering Spanish airspace.

Additional steps include banning entry for individuals linked to atrocities in Gaza, prohibiting imports from illegal Israeli settlements, and limiting consular services for Spanish citizens residing in those areas.

Madrid will contribute EUR10 million to UNRWA and increase total humanitarian and cooperation funding for Gaza to EUR150 million in 2026. It will also reinforce EU Border Assistance Mission staffing at Rafah and expand aid projects with the Palestinian Authority.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the measures aim to pressure Israel and ease Palestinian suffering, while condemning Hamas's attacks and criticising Israel's military campaign.

Spain halted arms sales to Israel in October 2023 and recognised the State of Palestine in May 2024. It has previously blocked suspected arms shipments at Cartagena and Algeciras ports.

The new framework formalises Spain's stance, adding airspace restrictions, import bans linked to settlement origin and targeted entry prohibitions.
