Maersk's APM Terminals Callao has handled over one million TEU in a single concession year for the first time since taking over Peru's Callao North Multipurpose Terminal in 2011, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

From July 2022 to June 2023, container volume reached one million TEU, up 11 per cent from 900,649 TEU in the previous cycle. APMT attributed the rise to a global shift favouring containerised cargo over general cargo.

The terminal's performance was boosted by a US$30 million investment in electric cranes, including a Super post-panamax ship-to-shore crane and three electric Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes, which improved loading efficiency and reduced vessel port stays.

Transshipment activity rose sharply, with weekly container movements increasing from 600 to 2,000 units. Productivity also hit a record 118 containers per hour, up 44 per cent from last year's average.

General manager Lars Vang Christensen said the milestone reflects client confidence in the terminal's capabilities and performance.

He added that the growth in transshipment traffic has reinforced Callao's role as a regional hub, supported by shareholder investment in modernisation and a long-term partnership with Peru.
